Sabres Daily: Backlund Staying In Calgary; Klingberg Injured
The Calgary Flames are facing a potential mass exodus next summer, as a number of key players are unrestricted free agents who have either informed the club that they will not sign an extension or are in the process of negotiations. The Flames have one less player to worry about, as the club announced that they have signed veteran Mikael Backlund to a two-year, $9 million extension beginning in 2024-25, and named the 34-year-old team captain.
HE'S BACKS AND WEARING THE C!
We're proud to announce Mikael Backlund has been signed to a two-year contract extension and has been named the 21st captain in franchise history!

In their 5-2 victory over the Sabres at the Kraft Hockeyville game in West Lorne, ON on Wednesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs lost defenseman John Klingberg. The veteran blueliner, who signed a one-year, $4.15 million deal with the Leafs in July, did not return to the game after the first period. Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said after the game that Klingberg felt “something tightening up” early in the game and was held out for precautionary reasons.
