The NHL got some concerning news late last season after Bally Sports announced they were filing for bankruptcy. This affected over a dozen NHL club’s regional broadcast coverage. According to Michael Russo of the Athletic, most of those clubs (like the Minnesota Wild) are prepared with contingency plans if they are unable to operate this season. Russo indicated that the backup plan likely involves streaming video or an over-the-air option.

The NHL’s first round of waivers was on Thursday, and the Pittsburgh Penguins were the busiest club, announcing five players (Taylor Fedun, Jonathan Gruden, Xavier Ouellet, Rem Pitlick and Ty Smith). Smith was a first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, traded to the Penguins in 2022 for defenseman John Marino. Another name with some intrigue is Vancouver waiving goalie Spencer Martin. Martin made 29 starts for the Canucks last season and could be of interest to Tampa Bay with the recent news that Andrei Vasilevskiy will be out for up to two months after back surgery.
