Sabres Daily: Captain “Rat” In Boston; Canadiens Deal DeSmith
The Boston Bruins announced their replacement for Patrice Bergeron as team captain on Wednesday, and unexpectedly it is winger Brad Marchand. Marchand has been with the Bruins since 2009 and was a member of the club’s 2011 Stanley Cup-winning squad. The 35-year-old is known for playing with an edge, getting under the skin of the opposition, and at times stepping over the line. Those qualities have made him a valuable commodity during his 14-year career, but Marchand will likely have to keep those antics under control as he steps into a leadership role in Boston.

The Montreal Canadiens told goalie Casey DeSmith that they would likely move him before the season after the three-way trade with Pittsburgh and San Jose involving Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson. On Wednesday, the Habs shipped DeSmith to the Vancouver Canucks for winger Tanner Pearson and a 2025 third-round draft pick. DeSmith had a 15-16-4 record, 3.17 GAA, and .905 save percentage with the Penguins last season, Pearson missed all but 14 games of last season with a hand injury.
