The Buffalo Sabres announced that they have loaned forward Anton Wahlberg to the SHL’s Malmo Redhawks on Tuesday. The 18-year-old Wahlberg was selected 39th overall at the NHL Draft in Nashville in June and signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Sabres last month.

Wahlberg played 32 games for Malmo’s junior-level club last season, as well as 17 games at the pro level for Malmo, and is expected to get extensive playing time in the SHL this season, as well as possibly playing for Sweden at the 2024 IIHF World Junior in Gothenburg this December.

Sabres In Case You Missed It

Three-time Stanley Cup winner Jonathan Toews took to social media on Thursday to announce that he will be taking a leave of absence from the NHL this season to recover from the after-effects of COVID that caused him to miss the entire 2020-21 season and miss significant time the last two years.

The 35-year-old specified in his statement that he is not retiring, but is taking the time to “fully heal and enjoy life to the fullest once again”. Toews captained the Hawks to Cup victories in 2010, 2013, and 2015, but based on his statement closed the Chicago chapter of his career, and if he continues it will be with another NHL club.
