Sabres Daily: Habs Deal Petry To Detroit; DeSmith Still In Limbo

The second tenure for defenseman Jeff Petry in La Belle Province lasted just over a week, as the veteran blueliner was dealt to the Detroit Red Wings for a 2025 mid-round pick and defenseman Gustav Lindstrom. The 35-year-old Michigan native had 31 points (5 goals, 26 assists) in 61 games last season for Pittsburgh, but was dealt back to Montreal as a salary dump in the three-way deal with San Jose involving Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson. Montreal retained 50% of Petry’s salary and he will be playing for his third team in three seasons.

Sabres In Case You Missed It

The Buffalo Sabres in the opinion of some still need to reinforce their goaltending and a viable veteran backup option for Devon Levi, with uncertainty at #2 with either Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen or Eric Comrie. One possible option is veteran Casey DeSmith, who was recently dealt in the Karlsson deal to Montreal. Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports that Canadiens GM Kent Hughes asked DeSmith to be patient and that a trade to another team to accommodate him is still possible. The 32-year-old DeSmith makes the same salary as Comrie ($1.8 million) and went 15-16-4, with a 3.17 GAA and .905 save percentage last season.
