Sabres Daily: First Round Failures #9; Dunn Did
The Buffalo Sabres have had some major successes in the NHL Draft, starting with their first franchise selection of Gilbert Perreault, to Hall-of-Famers Tom Barrasso and Pierre Turgeon, to their most recent top overall picks of Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power, but where there is success, there is inevitably failure. For the next entry on the list of Sabres first-round failures, we look at a winger that never played a game in the Buffalo organization.
#9 Barrett Heisten
In a year where the Sabres had success making the Stanley Cup Final, they fell short at the Draft. With the 20th overall pick, they selected Heisten out of the University of Maine. The big left winger played two seasons with the Black Bears and chose to transfer to the Western Hockey League as a 20-year-0ld to become an unrestricted free agent.
Buffalo chose not to sign Heisten and after a big year with the Seattle Thunderbird, he signed with the New York Rangers. The Anchorage, Alaska native played 10 games on Broadway in 2001-02 before being sent down to the AHL and was later traded to Dallas. He played six more seasons in the AHL and ECHL before retiring in 2008.
