Sabres Daily: Top Prospects Not At Camp; Leafs Reloading

Published

on

The Buffalo Sabres opened their development camp on Sunday with a series of on-ice drills, but while 13th overall pick Zach Benson and nearly all the club’s 2023 Draft selections participated, GM Kevyn Adams revealed that the club was holding a number of their top prospects out of the five-day camp.

2022 first-rounders Matthew Savoie, Noah Ostlund, and Jiri Kulich, winger Isak Rosen, goalie Devon Levi, and defenseman Vsevolod Komarov were all excused due to nagging injuries or long gruelling campaigns in the Calder Cup Playoffs, Memorial Cup or World Championships.  In the case of some of the players, Adams explained that it did not make sense to have the European players head home for a couple of weeks, only to come back for a camp they played in last summer.

Leafs Reloading After Mass Exodus

The Toronto Maple Leafs saw nearly all of their unrestricted free agents leave for other clubs on the opening day of free agency, with Ryan O’Reilly and Luke Schenn signing on with Nashville, Noel Acciari, Michael Bunting, and Justin Holl getting three-year deals with Pittsburgh, Carolina, and Detroit, and Alex Kerfoot going to Arizona. GM Brad Treliving added only enforcer Ryan Reaves and defenseman John Klingberg on July 1, but the Leafs arguably made the biggest splash on Day 2, signing winger Tyler Bertuzzi to a one-year, $5.5 million deal and Max Domi to a one-year, $3 million deal.
