Sabres Daily: WNY Native McCarthy Selected; Draft Roundup

The Buffalo Sabres believe they were successful in stocking the shelves with promising prospects on Day 2 of the NHL Draft in Nashville, following the selection of winger Zach Benson on Wednesday. The club added a pair of players with size in the second round in Swedish forward Anton Wahlberg and Slovak defenseman Maxim Strbak, but the rest of Day 2 was highlighted by the selection of Clarence Center, NY native Gavin McCarthy.

McCarthy, a 6’2″, 185 lb. blueliner, was picked in the third round (86th overall) after scoring 27 points (8 goals, 19 assists) and compiling 88 penalty minutes with Muskegon of the USHL last season and is committed to play for Boston University in the fall.

Cliff Notes On The Rest
4th Round – Ethan Miedema (Left Wing – Kingston – OHL) Traded as part of the deal that sent Shane Wright to the Windsor Spitfires, the 6’4″ winger scored 52 points (20 goals, 32 assists) with the Spitfires / Frontenacs last season.
5th Round – Scott Ratzlaff (Goalie – Seattle – WHL) Ratzlaff split time with Winnipeg prospect Thomas Milic last season and was 25-8-1, with a 2.15 GAA and .915 save %, but was the backup to the older Milic through the Thunderbirds WHL playoffs and Memorial Cup run.
6th Round – Sean Keohane (Defense – Dexter – Mass HS) A 6’4″ 194 lb. defenseman who is a good skater and has a physical edge to his game, the Massachusetts high schooler is set to play a year in the USHL and is committed to play at Harvard in 2024.
7th Round – Norwin Panocha (Defense – Berlin – Deutsch Juniors) The 6’1″, 185 lb. blueliner scored two goals for Germany at the 2023 U-18 World Juniors and is slated to play in the German League this season.
