Sabres Daily: Trade Dominoes Falling; The Four Dismantlers

Published

on

It has become trade weekend in the NHL, primarily from teams looking to get the jump on clearing out their roster. The Philadelphia Flyers are at the center of a pair of deals.

The trade that is sure to take place has Philadelphia sending defenseman Tony DeAngelo back to the Carolina Hurricanes and retaining 50% of his $5 million salary for an unnamed prospect, less than 12 months after the Flyers dealt three draft picks to get him. The other reportedly involves center Kevin Hayes going to the St. Louis Blues. It could be a much bigger trade, but it is reportedly being blocked by the no-movement/no-trade clause of one of the Blues defensemen going back to the Flyers.

The Dismantlers Increase To Four

It does appear that the teams set to dismantle their roster over the next few weeks have increased to four. The Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames are doing so involuntarily since the bulk of their core group is entering the final year of their contracts and do not want to stay in Western Canada. Nashville and Philadelphia also seem to be heading toward tearing things down to the studs, but new GMs Barry Trotz and Daniel Briere are doing this by design. Any one of these four teams could end up being a trade partner for the Buffalo Sabres, as all of them are looking for young, retainable assets in a trade.
