Sabres Daily: Housley Joins Rangers; Cap At $83.5 Million?

Published

on

The Buffalo Sabres saw a member of their alumni in Michael Peca leave the organization to join the New York Rangers. On Wednesday, another former Sabre reportedly will be joining Peca on Broadway. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and Arthur Staple of the Athletic indicated that ex-Buffalo head coach Phil Housley will join Peter Laviolette’s coaching staff.

The 59-year-old Hall-of-Famer was an assistant under Laviolette in Nashville before becoming head coach of the Sabres in 2017.  Housley was 58-84-22 in two seasons with Buffalo before being fired in 2019. He served as an assistant in Arizona for three seasons but was let go after the 2021-22 season by the Coyotes.

The NHL is set to announce the salary cap for the 2023-24 season before the Draft in Nashville next week, and according to Chris Johnston of TSN, the NHL and NHLPA failed to agree on a higher amount than the $1 million increase to $83.5 million that was previously agreed to when the Collective Bargaining Agreement was negotiated in 2020. After the signings of Zemgus Girgensons and Kyle Okposo, the Sabres are $13.6 million under the salary cap per Puckpedia.
