The 49-year-old, who played for Vancouver, Buffalo, the NY Islanders, Edmonton, Toronto, and Columbus in his 14-year NHL career, was the Isles captain under Laviolette for two seasons and left the Buffalo Jr. Sabres in 2020 to be the development coach under him with the Washington Capitals. Peca joined the Sabres organization after one year with the Capitals, serving as an assistant to Seth Appert in Rochester for the last two seasons.  Former Sabre Mike Weber also departed Appert’s staff earlier this month to join Craig Berube’s staff with the St. Louis Blues.
