Sabres Daily: Worlds Day 1 Roundup; Leafs Eliminated By Panthers
Five Buffalo Sabres are taking part in the 2023 IIHF World Championships in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia this month. Winger Alex Tuch was the star of the contingent on Day 1 with two goals for Team USA in their 4-1 victory over Finland, but other Sabres players playing for Canada and Germany made significant contributions.
JJ Peterka led Team Germany in ice time with 21:38 in a 1-0 loss to Sweden.
Canada’s Jack Quinn assisted on MacKenzie Weegar’s second-period goal, while Peyton Krebs had a pair of helpers on goals by Lawson Crouse and Sammy Blais in a 6-0 win over Latvia. Sabres goalie Devon Levi was the backup for Canadian starter Samuel Montembeault, who made 23 saves for the shutout.
Sammy Blais makes it 4-0 after he scored… from behind the goal line. About as tough of an angle as you can ask for.

Leafs Fall To Florida, Lose Series Clincher In Overtime
The Toronto Maple Leafs dream of winning their first Stanley Cup since 1967 will have to wait another year, as Nick Cousins scored late in the first overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 victory at Scotiabank Arena on Friday and a series victory in five games.

The Leafs fell behind 2-0 in the first period on goals by Aaron Ekblad and Carter Verhaeghe. Morgan Rielly scored in the middle frame to narrow the Panthers lead to one and looked to have tied the game late in the period, but the puck was ruled to have crossed the line after the whistle.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 50 saves in the victory, while rookie Joseph Woll made 41 saves in the loss.
